Definition Poem- By K.D.

What is my family?
People that I have strength in.
               A buttress for my strength.
               A gift from my God.
               A impenetrable wall.
               My friends and companions
               My love and joy.
People who I can confide in.
That is my Family!

Anyway By MB

There is always a chance of failure,
But an even chance of success,
Sometimes you feel like an anchor,
But you just have to progress,
You just have to keep on going,
on and on again,
You have to fight forever,
Until the very end,
Never give up for never,
then you'll see victory around the bend.r

Anyway J.S.

You can use your strength on nothin
just to be pushed right back down
And when you think it might be somethin
It turns it self around
don't feel turned away

You can run until your hurtin
just to bend back down in pain
you don't know if it is workin
it's not even a gain
don't feel pushed away

You can pull until you broken
just to lye back down and cry
And you just end up outspoken
wonderin why do I even try?
don't feel shoved away
why should you anyway
You can love for days
with all your heart
But they just turn away
man you don't feel smart
Love them anyway
it's you say

If it hurts do it don't feel sour
If it works save the hour
If it's crushed build it up again
If life is falling don't let it go down the drain
Just build life up again.

Anyway Poem - L.I.

Sky High:

To accomplish anything, you have to try,
To begin anything, you have to try,
To complete anything, you have to try,
To do anything, you have to try,
Try to go sky high.

Believe in yourself,
Believe in others,
You need to believe in something,
Believe you can go sky high.

You Can Go Sky High!
Go Sky High!

Numbers - L.I.

This picture reminds me of the poem because it shows numbers, randomly placed in a spiral. This is a great example of numbers because it shows how numbers are everywhere and in everything. You can read this as one huge number, or in many separate numbers. You can use them to describe, and you can use them to figure out. Life is one big jumble of numbers.

This poem gave me the impression that no matter what kind of situation it is, there are numbers. No matter where or when, there are numbers. It gave me the impression that numbers aren't difficult of tricky. They are easy in every way. It is us that makes them more difficult.

The most interesting phrase in my opinion is this:

"Even subtraction is never loss,
just addition somewhere else:
five sparrows take away two,
the two in someone else's
garden now."

This is the most interesting because it shows almost optimism in numbers. When life is negative (subtraction), it will always turn around (addition). This is displayed in this phrase. Just because two sparrows have flown away, doesn't mean there gone. They are happiness in someone else's life.

Anyway Poem By K.D.

If life was easy would we have to try,
to touch the sky?
If life was easy would we have to try
to do the impossible?
If life was easy would we have
to wish and hope?
If was easy why would we cry?
Who said that life was easy?
Who said that life would go our way?
It won't go our way.
That's why we have to try,
 to touch the sky.
That's why we have to try,
to do the impossible.
That's why we have
to hope and wish
Follow your dreams,
even if they seem impossible.
Do it  anyway.

O Captain! My Captain! J.S.

In this poem by Walt Whitman he is reffering to Abraham Licoln as his captain, his rolemodel, his dream. Abraham Licoln was Walt's captain because he was brave, he told the truth, and stood up for his people.
O Captain! My Captain! makes me feel despondent, I don't like the feeling that someone would commit murder, or even think of that. I feel bad for Walt Whitman because when you believe in someone and they make your dreams come true, when they die you feel like your dreams are crushed and you have nothing left. I feel this way when I read the poem because of all the descriptive words used in the poem, that make it like a story. The words and phrases that sugest how Walt Whitman is feeling are mainly in the last two verses, one of my favorites is
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up--for you the flag is flung for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.

I think this shows how Walt Whitman feels because it sounds like he is trying to wake Abraham up from slumber, with no hope that it will ever work, also he talks a little bit about a funeral, and how he should come back and see how much everyone loved him. And when Walt calls him father that shows that they have such a good relationship, and Walt really feels upset about his death.

Numbers Comment by K.D.

I chose the picture on the left because with these numbers you can make any number. With one and nine you can make 91 or 19 or even 9.1 with lots more possibilities. Also with every number there is some thing new to do. I chose the picture on the right because you can do even more things with numbers. You can add, subtract compare numbers. There's no end to numbers!

Jabberwocky comment part 2 J.S.

Lewis Carol wrote many famous books including:
1865 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
1869 Phantasmagoria (A collection of poems)
1872 Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice found there
1876 The Hunting of the Snark (A long nonsense poem written in a mock-heroic style)
1879 Euclid and his Modern Rivals (a play written in defence of Euclid's approach to the teaching of geometry)
1879 Doublets (a word game)
1883 Rhyme? And Reason? (A poetry collection - includes The Hunting of the Snark as illustrated by Henry Holiday as well as Phantasmagoria and other poems)
1885 A Tangled Tale (A series of short stories, each containing one or more puzzles.)
1886 The Game of Logic. (An elementary text on logic)
1886 Alice's Adventures under Ground (The facsimile of the original manuscript of the story as presented to Alice Liddell)
1889 The Nursery "Alice" (An adaption of the Alice for younger children)
1889 Sylvie and Bruno 1893 Sylvie and Bruno Concluded (The second and concluding part of the Sylvie and Bruno story)
1896 Symbolic Logic Part I Elementary (The first part of Carroll's major textbook on logic)

The poem reminds me of hiis books in so many ways, because when you hear the verse
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves,
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

It's funny, because in the Alice and wonderland stories there are different creatures and vocabulary, for example in Alice and wonderland you have the wicked queen, all the different animals and the mad hatter, the vocabulary used to describe those charecters is somewhat like the vocabulary in this poem, most of the words are not even real.
It uses diefferent vocabulary

Numbers MB

This exact picture was brought to mind when i read this poem, it is a picture from a game in the Mega-Man series, the reason it was rememebered is because it talks about how  generous numbers are and this character is generous and his name is Zero like the number.

Poetic music by R.N

Imagine By: John Lennon

I think that the song Imagine by John Lennon is poetic because all of the lines rhyme, It tells of a better time, and it also is very deep. It's lyrics mean a lot of things and it is all that god wants (except for the no religion part). I think that this song tells of a peaceful happy time because of when it says that there's "nothing to kill or die for".

Lyrics

Imagine there's no heaven.
It's easy if you try.
no hell below us.
above us only sky.
imagine all the people
living for today ahaa

Imagine there's no countries.
It's not hard to do.
nothing to kill or die for.
and no religion too.
imagine all the people.
living life in peace yoohoo

you may say I'm a dreamer.
But I'm not the only one.
I hope some day you will join us.
and the world will live as one.

Imagine no possession.
I wonder if you can.
no need for greed or hunger.
a brotherhood of man.
imagine all the people sharing all the world yoohoo

you may say I'm a dreamer.
But I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you will join us.
and the world will live as one.

Anyway Poem- Hannah

You can spend your whole life,
Trying,
Hoping,
Wishing,
Reaching for the top,
and you know that you'll never make it,
You can't do it.
But Try, and hope, and wish, and reach for the top,
Because there is always a chance,
That you will make it.
You can do it.
You can do anything if you really want to.
So want it,
And you will succeed.

Definition poem R.N

What is a book?

an adventure
something to read
pencil to paper
a great mystery
full of fairies
and fancy tea sets too
it can make you happy
but also very sad
and sometimes all the endings
can make you very mad
a book has lots of pictures
on its cover to be seen

that is a book.

Numbers - Daniel

This picture reminds me of the poem because the picture is a collage of numbers which to me is saying that numbers are all around us kind of like in the poem and that we need to use numbers every single day. At home, in school (well obviously), outside, in Vegas. Anywhere you are numbers are used. Prices, how many there are of something, almost everything today involves numbers and that is why I picked this picture.

Anyway poem (R.N)

I think that the song "anyway" is trying to say that if you don't try you will amount to nothing. You will still amount to something even if what you started to make is destroyed. That is what hope is and this song would help me when I am in a time of need.

Numbers Comment- Hannah

These pictures reminded me of the poem "Numbers" because if the colourful numbers in different, interesting patterns. I really liked the poem because I thought that it was very unique. I think that these pictures reflect the poem very well.

Anyway- Daniel

When dreams are too far out of reach,
and they cannot be grasped.
If life was a dream and dreams were life,
would life be real?
If wishes came true, if dreams were reality,
If all days were happy, if no one was sad,
If peace was forever, and forever we were glad,
A life of happiness would be...
But some dreams are too far out of reach,
and some cannot be grasped.
If life was a dream and dreams were life,
life would be real.

Definition Poem - L.I.

Who is my God?

              Our creator from dust
              The almighty one
The father, the son and the holy spirit
              Our teacher
              A protector of all
              Forgiver of sins
              Illuminator of the world
              Vanquisher of darkness
              Opposer to the devil
              A leader

That is my God!

IF Rudyard Kipling J.S.

In the poem IF, I think Rudyard Kipling is trying to
express to the reader that you can do anything
and if everyone believed that think of all the amazing things you can do!
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

It is basically saying if you could do what everyone
else is  not doing than you could be amazing and supereor,
 in mind and body.
The poem means if you could do all these amazing things,
like always be proud of you and your friends,
stand up tall and think with love happiness,
you will be perfect, and you will go to heaven.
You'll be a proud Candan and a true man/ women.
I think this song really reflects passion and
I think that is expressed srtongly in the 3rd stansa;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

This means that if you can force your'e heart to love,
and to give passion it will come naturally to you.
I really thought this poem gave so much opinion and expressed all the things people do to love.
The third line really speaks to me because it says If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
To me that means: if you can stand when people push you down, and you can stand up, you are amazing.
I think that it also means that you believe in yourself when your life seems empty.
But overall to me this poem is special and I think it is beautiful in so many ways.

Deffinition Poem: A.C.

What is music?

An expression of heart, and soal
A collection of sounds pieced together like a puzzle:
All fitting together perfectly
Beautiful
Gripping
Something that pulls you out of the real world,
And into a new one
An Opportunity
A Passion
An art

This is music

"O Captain! My Captain!" Response - L.I.

"O Captain! My Captain!" made me feel almost sad and also a bit creeped out when it said,
"But O heart! Heart! Heart! O the bleeding drops of red, where on the deck my Captain lies, fallen cold and dead." because I wasn't expecting it to be that type of poem. When I read the title I was kind of expecting more of a sea voyage poem.

I think Walt Whitman was referring to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in this poem. I also think that Whitman must have felt a strong connection to Lincoln because he called him "father". Another phrase that suggests Whitman's feeling toward Lincoln was when he wrote,"O Captain! My Captain! Rise up and hear the bells; rise up-for you the flag is flung-for you the bugle trills; for you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths -for you the shores a-crowding; for you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! Dear father! This arm beneath your head; it is some dream that on the deck, you've fallen cold and dead."

Description Poem- M.F.S.

Numbers Comment-M.F.S.

Numbers are so fascinating, as everyone is different. I picked my two images because one is different numbers all mixed together that apart aren't much but when together are huge. And the other shows a pattern which all numbers do. my favourite verse is "Even subtraction is never loss, just addition somewhere else: five sparrows take away two, the two in someone else's garden now." it shows that subtraction is addition somewhere else which is cheerful and then its not like you just killed the bird which is comforting.

My impression of the poem is that numbers are useful and the writer wanted to draw attention that is often ignored or taken advantage of. Also it gives a different view of numbers which are always so cheerful to be used. This would be something good to show someone who is just learnig numbers so to show what their for.

Before the Storm- M.F.S.

The quiet,the peaceful,
The rippling waves,
The birds chirping
The frogs croaking.

Every beast getting to their home,
The calm before a storm;
The thunder shouting,
The wind yelping.

In fear if not in fright,
The world gets ready holding its young;
Hoping the best,
Preparing the worst.

The storm is good,
It creates,
Its destroys,
And it nourishes.

O Captian! My Captain! Response-M.F.S.

The poem "O Captain! My Captain!" is about the assassination of US president Abraham Lincoln who accomplished many things in his lifetime. Walt Whitman obviously felt some emotions regarding the assassination as you can tell in these lines
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up--for you the flag is flung for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.

But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead

All those lines reflect the compassion Walt Whitman felt for the president, and they are all over the poem, there are even more but these where the most emotional. Whitman calls Licholn Father which is a pretty meaningful title.

The poem makes me feel sad as on line is "But I, with mournful tread," just sounds so serious and sad as mourning is what you do when some one's died. Also I think this poem is a compliment to Lincoln for the lines "Rise up--for you the flag is flung for you the bugle trills, For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths for you the shores a-crowding, For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;" sounds that Walt Whitman is trying to wake up his Captain who is dead.

Try By: A.C.

When you try, and try but never win
Sometimes you feel like you want to give in
Yet still your mind tells you "reach for the sky"
And you continue to try, try, try

Now go to bed tommorrow is a new day
And when you wake up don`t look grey
Make the world your own, try to grasp it and mold it
Make it a canvas that you can paint which way you like
And if it does not turn out quite right
Try, try again

image poetry- I.S.

Calming waters, gentle breeze,
Only few get to see,
Golden peaks, and rolling hills,
Free to act of their will,

Infinite peace,
and bold green trees,
blue skies,
Last forever,

A place like this is rare today,
Only few come your way,
Sun set with golden flames,
Dancing wildly, can't be tamed

The world is huge,
with many places,
Many buildings,
Many faces

New adventure where you turn,
But there no place like your own,
you'll remember this when your grown,
But there's no place like home.

Anyway poem by OC

If I can't reach my highest goal,
I will try,
If I can't do what I am told,
I will try,
If I can't become what I want to be,
I will try,
If a can't find what is in me,
I will try,
I will try to reach my goals,
I will try to obey,
I will try to become what I want to be,
and I will find what is in me.

Anyway Post by N.R.: Try to Touch the Sky

Sometimes you try to make pigs fly,
It is impossible but you still try.
You try to be that famous guy,
You try to make towers that touch the sky,
It is impossible, but you try,
To touch the sky.

Sometimes on your bed you lie,
Then you get up and try,
To touch the sky.
To touch the sky is all you dream of,
Just like, a bright white dove.
You still believe,
You can touch the sky,
And all you need,
Is to try.
Try to touch the sky.

Where the Sidewalk Ends-M.F.S.

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a poem by Shel Silverstein. You could make the animation for the poem by using a program like Moviemaker or Frames. My interpretation of the poem is that sometimes we have to slow down and appreciate what is just beyond the "this place where the smoke blows black, And the dark street winds and bends. Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow" as beyond that there are whole worlds to discover if you can get off that road that humanity is determined to take. Beyond the road there is a place where you can stop, take a breath and enjoy living, which our ancestors did without thinking but that we have to struggle for. In my mind this poem is telling us to slow down and enjoy the view, as tomorrow it could be gone.

Pretending - Hannah

I stand there, pretending
Pretending like I'm happy.
Pretending to be somebody I'm not.
Pretending I'm fine.
But when I get home I can't pretend anymore.
The dishes are piled in the sink.
The windows are cracked.
The fridge is open and its empty, except for  half empty milk carton.
Moms not home.
I'm alone.
I can't bring myself to call a friend over, or else they would know who I really am.
I walk to my pull-out couch bed in our tiny living room, and cry myself to sleep.
I wake up, moms still not there.
I comb out my hair and brush my teeth,
and get ready for another day of pretending.

This poem is based on the song "pictures on a crooked wall" by Tenille.

Mother's Day Poem - A.O.

What is a Mother?

What is a mother?
Truly it is a wounderful creature!
But what is it really...?

Well, a mother is kind and generous,
Loving and beautiful.

A mother is someone you can talk to,
To whom you can go to in a time of pain.

A mother is always there for you,
Stuck like glue.
And no matter how hard you pull,
She is still always there for you.

That, is a true mother.
That, is my mother.

Image Poem S.L.

The world is a hard place
And sometimes you just need to cry
So you sit alone in the corner
Hoping that nobody walks by
You know tomorrow is Monday
And yesterday is gone
You want it to be over
So you can carry on
The bright light shining darkness
And the cold is making you uneasy
So you put on your happiest smile
It's been an hour in a moment
Some things never change
And you smile
Cause the trouble makes you happy
And the tears just make you laugh
Hide behind the shadows
And put tomorrow in the past
It all goes round in circles
But you don’t know what is coming
You may want to quit and hide
But you've come so far this week
The akward kind of silence
Is there where ever you go
You don't know what to do
So you just hold your head up high
You know that you've cried your last tears
So just sit there and you smile

Anne Shirley's Bio Poem S.L.

Anne Shirley
Child of Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert
Who loves trees, any type of mornings, and pretty elegant clothes
Who hates the orphan asylum, being alone for a long time, and sad unhealthy trees
Who wants to go to a place where she can sleep in a big tree
Who wishes she could have met her real parents when she was old enough to remember them
Who is scared of going back to the orphan asylum
Who dreams of getting married in a beautiful lacey white wedding dress
Who is determined to have a family
Who values time alone so she can think and watching water travel down a creek
Who is proud of Matthew and Marilla for taking her in
Who graduated from Queen's College
Who lives at Green Gables in Prince Edward Island

Numbers Response S.L.

This picture reminds me of the poem Numbers because the poem shows you how often we use numbers and we don't really notice it and this is a picture of Bingo counters which shows you another use for numbers.

To me this poem is a creative way to teach us just how we use numbers all of the time but never really think about it that much.

I found the pharse "I like the generosity of numbers. The way, for example, they are willing to count
anything or anyone: two pickles, one door to the room, eight dancers dressed as swans." interseting because they Personified the numbers by giving then characteristics.

The Goaltender. By: Gage Jones
The goaltender sinks into his net
he is the teams best bet
even though the team is winning now
one false move and they have lost pow

You wonder what goes through his mind
as the game slows down to a grind
the thing he wants most is to help his team
but that might only be a foolhardy dream

He won the cup but he's getting old
now he needs what he's been told
but, sometimes he seems to forget
that his reflexes are no longer propelled with a jet

He is fifty years old and wants to stop playing
he makes a save and on the ice he is laying
he has suffered a severe heart attack
and is being tended to by the janiter, Jack

He has now become dead
not from a bullet made from lead
but when keep at something for years and longer
remember the story of the goaltender

Where the sidewalk ends

I think that Shel silverstien is trying to say that we will live lives that are measured and slow and that we will know where and when it ends. I also think that when he says that we will "follow the chalk white arrows" he is saying that when we make a decision we always follow it.
